Residency Memories

Residency Memories

{Voodoo Doughnut, Eugene, Oregon}

I enjoy taking a stroll down memory lane every once in awhile to reminisce about the past.  While trying to find a photo for my next blog post, I came across pictures of fun times in Oregon during residency training.  In effort not to embarrass my fellow colleagues (think trashy theme party, dancing to “Baby Got Back,” and movie nights with some of the most grotesque films ever made, to name a few examples), I limited the photos to the least embarrassing (not surprisingly, many photos were eliminated), pictures mostly of myself, or with the obtained consent from my residency friends (if identifiable in the photos).  I may constantly mention the hardships of the journey through medical school and residency, but my three years spent in Oregon brought about many friendships, fun experiences, and memorable moments that I’ll treasure forever.

Oregon Trails

Oregon Trails

The countdown of the last eight years of medical school and residency seemed never-ending, but the remaining seven weeks until graduation seem to fly by way too fast.  So much has happened in the last six months since my latest blogpost, which includes securing a new job as an outpatient psychiatrist back home in southern California, finishing my final duties as chief resident, starting/leading a bipolar support group, gaining confidence in my abilities as a psychotherapist, and feeling sentimental about my treasured time spent in Oregon.  I anticipate the next few weeks to be packed with fun-filled exploration of the great Northwest, which I plan to share with all of you, starting with a few photos from recent trips to  Silverton and the Oregon coast.

RFF: Residency Friends Forever

RFF: Residency Friends Forever

Is it rare to have a class of residents who actually like each other and get along?  When I moved away from home, the residents in my class were not just peers– they became my family.  When one member leaves, you get hit with a sense of loss that affects you far more than you could’ve imagined.  When more than one member leaves, you try even harder to keep your support system from falling apart even further, only to hope and find comfort in believing that life circumstances have led them to a better path.  I’m fortunate to have formed wonderful friendships with amazing people over the course of one year, but will definitely last a lifetime.  C’est la vie.

Memories in Home Cooking

Memories in Home Cooking

{Strolling with my aunt in Pasadena}

I miss home-cooked meals.  There’s nothing better than coming home from a long, exhausting day of work and being greeted with a table full of your favorite dishes.  Fortunately, during med school I lived next to my fabulous aunt who would call me almost every night and ask what I wanted for dinner.  We recently had brunch at Roscoe’s though as delicious as chicken & waffles can be, I wished I could’ve eaten homemade food instead.  Today, I came home to frozen pizza and leftover spaghetti, but I dreamt of pancit and lumpia (filipino dishes) with every dreaded bite.  I suppose it’s time to expand my repertoire and learn to cook more than eggs and ten variations of spaghetti.

Family First

Family First

No matter how bitchy, snappy, stressed, and irritable I can get as result of the often brutal, mental, and physical demands of residency, the one thing I can always count on is family.  Doctors dedicate their lives to caring for others  that sometimes work takes priority over family, friends, and our own well-being.  I’ve missed fabulous weddings, warm holiday gatherings, inspirational graduations, and lovely funerals, to name a few sacrifices made for the sake of my occupation.  Instead of regret, my advice to anyone so heavily immersed in work is to take a moment and remember what’s most important in their lives.  For me, I choose family.   So as I pack for a last minute trip to the Philippines, I recall the memory of my role model and the reason I became a doctor, my grandfather.  And during the 14-hour flight tomorrow, I’ll anticipate a long overdue reunion with my grandmother, which has thus far been postponed as a result of work.  No more guilt…no more regrets.
