Fight the Blues

written by freudandfashion
Fight the Blues

{Emerald Bay, South Lake Tahoe}

I’ve written about the subject of laziness several times in my blog (here, here, and here), and this week has been exceptionally rough to get through.  I attribute my dysphoria to a combination of factors: mental exhaustion (struggling with recent loss that I wrote about here, weekly sessions with my therapist exploring the origins of my overwhelmingly self-critical tendencies), the weather changes (hello, hibernation mode), and the upcoming holidays.  Rather than writing a deeply emotional post, I felt it would be appropriate given my current mood to instead write about 3 things I did this week to combat the seasonal blues.  I may be a psychiatrist who inherently gives advice, but I seriously learn a lot from my patients and others.  Would love to hear about any techniques you apply to prevent from feeling down this time of year as well!

1.  Write a simple to-do list.  I used to be overly-ambitious with my lists, but that just left me feeling worse and unaccomplished if I couldn’t get everything done.  This week, I listed 3 mandatory responsibilities plus a few smaller, easier tasks (yes, I even listed getting the mail as a task and felt great when I checked it off my list!).

2.  Get moving.  Though the couch and Netflix seem far more appealing than going to the gym, I struck a balance by going out for a quick jog.  Even a 15 minute run helped provide some exercise and made me feel less isolated.

3.  Schedule an activity with a friend..and don’t flake!  When I have something planned, I hold myself more accountable and am less likely to cancel, especially if it’s with a friend.  Even something as simple as putting on makeup for an outing made me feel more like my usual self again.

Thought of the Day:  What different techniques do you utilize and find helpful?

Thankful Thursdays

My aunt’s guide dog, Walnut

Meet Walnut, a wise, reactive, and protective guide dog by day; warm, playful, and attention-craving yellow lab by night.  For Thankful Thursdays I’m proud to list Walnut, for I am thankful for the service and unconditional love she has provided my aunt since 2004.  Walnut retires this month from her duties as a seeing eye dog so that she can enjoy her life as a playful pet with less stress (pretty much what we hope to achieve as humans when we retire!).

I also wrote a previous post on our family dog, Sanka, a career-change dog who grew up with Walnut and was also trained as a guide dog for the blind.

FYI Service dogs may be certified as Psychiatric Service Dogs and are individually trained to perform tasks to mitigate the psychiatric disabilities of their partners.

How about you?  Would love to hear what you are thankful for this week!

People who meet me tend to perceive me as a positive person, but I’ll admit that I wasn’t always that way.  I was quite the complainer growing up and blamed others if things didn’t go my way.  My negativity improved through maturation over time, but my four years of psychiatric residency training certainly helped me become more self-aware. Learning about different psychotherapy techniques sharpened my skills even further, and one modality that I use involves Positive Psychotherapy.

What is Positive Psychotherapy (PPT)?

In a nutshell, Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman spearheaded the development and research of PPT as an intervention for treatment of depression and the theory consists of some of the following concepts:

– focus on the POSITIVE (factors that contribute to happiness and build upon one’s strengths)

– build POSITIVE EMOTIONS (about the past, present, and future)

– identify and utilize your STRENGTHS

  • for example, if you’re a creative person, do things that bring out your creativity (such as writing, photography, etc).  If you’re competitive, consider joining a recreational group or league

–  instead of letting your strengths and talents go to waste, apply them towards something MEANINGFUL (such as in your job, community, family, religious institution, etc)

Naturally, this can take a lot of work/effort especially since our minds may automatically take us down a negative spiral in the face of challenge and negativity.  With our often stressful and hectic lives, when something goes wrong, it seems like it requires more time and energy to switch to a positive mindframe.  With that in mind, Seligman’s team developed a series of exercises to help shift your mind towards more positive thinking, one of which includes listing “3 good things” that went well during your day.

So, with a slight twist and in the spirit of PPT, I created a new series on my blog called “Thankful Thursdays” where I will list 3 things I’m thankful for from the week and I encourage all of you to do the same!

Here’s my list from this week:

1.  Took advantage of living a few miles away from the beach and spent some time there to escape the triple digit California heat wave (picture above).

2.  I’m thankful for my family stopping by my office to visit and instead of my usual routine of going home to check email and watch tv, I enjoyed quality time with them over a delicious meal.

3.  Received a “sign” today which steered me in a different direction regarding a work project.  I truly believe that when one door closes, another one opens, so I’m staying focused and optimistic!

Oregon Trails

Oregon Trails

The countdown of the last eight years of medical school and residency seemed never-ending, but the remaining seven weeks until graduation seem to fly by way too fast.  So much has happened in the last six months since my latest blogpost, which includes securing a new job as an outpatient psychiatrist back home in southern California, finishing my final duties as chief resident, starting/leading a bipolar support group, gaining confidence in my abilities as a psychotherapist, and feeling sentimental about my treasured time spent in Oregon.  I anticipate the next few weeks to be packed with fun-filled exploration of the great Northwest, which I plan to share with all of you, starting with a few photos from recent trips to  Silverton and the Oregon coast.

Sunset, Sunrise

Sunset, Sunrise

{another sunset in Waikiki}

Written on May 10, 2011…

I just returned from an extremely quick and busy trip to Oahu, then LA, then the Philippines, then nor-cal, and now back to Oregon.  Overall, my trip was amazing, inspirational, sad, surreal, spiritual, traditional, and much more words I can’t even recall due overwhelming jet-lag.  Unforgettable.  I’ve watched the sun rise and set in many places, but never has the daily event inspired so much meaning…until the sun rose on the day of my grandmother’s funeral on May 7, 2011.  Each day is marked by a beginning and an end, but the memory of my grandmother’s laughter and love I will never forget.

Happy Birthday Lola…I miss you…

Spring Break Away

Spring Break Away

{Sausalito, CA.  The day was initially stormy, but the sun appeared just moments after}

I promised not to complain about weather, but it’s currently dark, cold, and intermittently rainy here.  A tiny bit of sunshine could easily brighten my mood and day.  In the meantime, I’ll takes a few moments to reminisce about recent trips to escape the dreariness until my next tropical vacation.

Oregon Winter

Oregon Winter

 {View from my window}

I just returned from a weekend in Sacramento and San Francisco where the weather was perfectly chilly, sunny, and breezy.  Yet, prior to my flight to nor-cal, I experienced two snowy days in Oregon where I’m sure that I’m the only one who initially stared out the window in fear about having to commute in the snow.  I’ve grown accustomed to texting fellow residents for driving tips and religiously checking weather.com to ensure I can tackle the snowy roads without problem, but have decided that instead of being constantly worried, I’m going to savor and enjoy the rest of my second Winter in Oregon no matter how snowy, icy, or rainy the weather may be.

{Is it nerdy that this pic reminds me of  bronchioles?}

Meaning of a Pomegranate

written by freudandfashion
Meaning of a Pomegranate

{Pomegranates growing in my parents’ backyard}

This year marked the first Thanksgiving spent in my family’s new house, which I feared might be a sad experience  since I knew how much my family loved our previous home.   As soon as I walked through the door, I immediately felt a sense of comfort walking into a wide, gorgeous space that had astonishing similarities to our last home.  Even more comforting was seeing my entire family together smiling and laughing with no visible signs of the overwhelming stress that took place just weeks before the holiday.  Yet, what struck me the most about this house was discovering a pomegranate tree in the backyard.  At that moment, I immediately recalled fond childhood memories of picking and eating pomegranates from the tree my grandfather planted in my parents’ first home.  It’s one of the fruit trees my grandfather meticulously cared for, and to me, represents regeneration, strength, and growth.  Not only did I feel thankful for spending a momentous weekend with family, but also for being reminded of my grandfather watching over us.

Writer’s Block

written by freudandfashion
Writer’s Block

On the day I graduated and officially became a doctor, I wished that my grandfather could’ve been there to see it.  I’ve noticed my tendency to get teary-eyed during therapy sessions, specifically when the issues are related to grief.  I’ve told patients to write letters to their loved ones to aid in processing their emotions and work towards resolving issues associated with their loss.  Now, if only I could get myself to write that letter…

Downtown Napa

Downtown Napa

{Kara’s Cupcakes…seasonal strawberry cream cupcake}

My recent visit to see family in northern California consisted of a deliciously appetizing day spent in downtown Napa.  I love the Napa Valley for its gorgeous wineries, world-class cuisine, and picturesque landscapes.  In the past, I’ve spent most of my time touring wineries, but exploring the downtown area left me equally impressed.  I’m in a phase of eating only free-range poultry and grass-fed beef (thank you, Food Inc.), so I was excited to find C CASA -An Innovative Tacqueria at the Oxbow Public Market (I highly recommend their nachos) and couldn’t resist a bite of a yummy treat from Kara’s Cupcakes.  We ended the night at Cole’s Chop House for an amazing dinner with a great bottle of pinot noir, and though I stuck to my current diet and ordered a seafood dish from the classic steakhouse (they serve corn-fed beef), my sister said her filet mignon was “melt-in-your-mouth” delicious.

{C CASA nachos with free-range chicken, chipotle sauce, and goat cheese}

I’ve noticed my latest posts have been more food & travel-inspired than psych-inspired, but I believe taking trips and enjoying a great meal is definitely good for the psyche.  More psych posts to come!
